Unintended Consequences of Target Leverage Regulation in Korea

Following the Asian financial crisis of 1997, the Korean government required chaebol firms (i.e., firms affiliated with business groups) to limit their debt-equity ratio below 200% in an effort to curb excessive borrowing associated withover-investments. Utilizing the government regulation as a quasi-natural experiment, we examine the effects of the target leverage regulation on affected firms¡¯risk-taking behavior and provide evi-dence on whether the regulation achieves its intended goal. Our results suggest that the regulation does in fact achieve its intended goal of lowering the financial leverage of firms. However, the regulation also has unintended consequences. Unlike firms meet-ing the target leverage with debt reductions, firms meeting the target with significant equity issuance exhibit 1) higher firm risk, 2) lower investment-q sensitivity and 3) lower profitability in the post-regulation period. Our evidence suggests that the costs of risky investment induced by equity financing outweighs the benefits from lowering leverage ratios. Thus, our research underlines the imperative for careful public policy design in relation to corporate capital structure.
How do unicorns increase their exit valuation?: An examination of the role of exit timing, government, and foreign investors

Advent of unicorn startups and their increment of the amounts become the topics with which draw attention in these days. One phenomenon which we focus on is that the firms with uncommonly high valuation have tendencies to postpone the exit time to gain more valuation and reputation. To examine this issue, this paper hypothesized the positive relationship between investment duration and exit valuation with 140 exited unicorn firms. Further, we investigate the moderating effects of institutional factors in country level through two ways, which are government policies supportive for startups and the distance of institutional instabilities between startups and foreign investors. We hypothesize their moderating roles upon the relationship of investment duration and exit valuation. The data is collected from the Crunchbase, the World Bank, the Global Competitiveness Report, and the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor. The hypotheses are supported as a result and there is an implication with respect to dealing with exit valuation of unicorn startups and their investment duration for the future researches.
The Mechanism of Creativity Promotion: A Servant Leadership's Perspective from a Vietnamese Venture

Employee creativity has become a must for organizations to stay competitive in a world of fast paced dynamic changes and knowledge economy. Progressively, creativity value has been recognized across a wide range of job duties, careers, and businesses. In an attempt to further contribute to the existing literature of creativity and servant lead-ership, especially at the individual level analysis in new settings, the authors examine the roles of follower competence and perceived organizational support (POS) inthe rela-tionship between servant leadership and follower engagement in creative behaviors. Data from 148 leader-follower dyads collected in a Vietnamese venture showed that follower competence is a significant moderator of the relationship. Moreover, POS was found to be a significant moderator of the mediating effect between servant leadership and follower creativity through follower competence, such that the mediating effect is strengthened under high level of POS rather than low level of POS. Implications for prac-tice and theory are discussed.
Improving the Value-creating Process in R&D Collaborations of SMEs: The Role of Entrepreneurial Orientation and Technological Competitiveness

For technology-intensive small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), R&D collabo-ration is an attractive means to facilitate technological innovation. However, SMEs often find it challenging to obtain the value of those partnerships. This study is to analyze factors determining the ability of firms to capture the value of R&D collaborations in which they participate. To do so, we first employ the concept of entrepreneurial ori-entation, which has been applied to analyze the firms¡¯ value-capturing ability more gen-erally, but never in the context of R&D collaboration. We investigate whether and to what extent the entrepreneurial orientation of collaborating SMEs contributes to their business performance (BP). Second, to reflect the role of the technological outputs of R&D collaborations for the value they create, we develop and operationalize a new inter-firm-level variable, technological competitiveness (TC) which indicates the contribution of the technological outputs developed by the collaborations to the competitive advant-age of the firms. Using a sample of 218 Korean SMEs engaging in R&D collaborations, we find that EO has a positive impact on TC which, in turn, has a positive impact on BP; and that TC fully mediates the relationship between EO and BP. The findings imply that EO is important for the collaborating firms to capture the value of R&D collaborations in which they participate. Moreover, the findings suggest that TC as a result of the collab-oration can predict BP of the collaborating firms, indicating its usefulness as a key per-formance indicator of SMEs¡¯ R&D collaborations. We discuss academic and managerial implications of our findings.
