Delisting of Short-lived IPO Firms
  • - Sang gyung Jun (Hanyang University)
[Abstract]
This research analyzes the phenomenon of "short-lived delisting", which refers to the event that some IPO firms suffer forced delisting after short listing period. We have found that firms with bigger size, lower debt ratio, longer history of business, and higher insider ownership are less likely to suffer from short-lived delisting. This result implies that the possibility of short-lived delisting is negatively correlated with the degree of sufficiency for listing requirements.
Secondly, we could not find strong evidence supporting for certification role of IPO mechanism. Underwriters' reputation does not significantly correlated with short-lived delisting. The evidence does not exist that short-lived delisted firms pay higher underwriters' fee.
Thirdly, firms raising more capital through IPO are less likely to suffer from short-lived delisting. However the usage of funded capital is not related with the possibility of short-lived delisting. This result contradicts with the notion that firms undertaking IPO for long-term investment, such as PPE investment or R&D investment, would be more likely to successfully stay in listing status.
The Effects of Perceived Power Sources and Justices on Supply Chain Integration: Evidences from Korean Small and Medium Sized Manufacturers

[Abstract]
Firms have enjoyed relational advantage by successfully integrating resources and capabilities of supply chain partners across organizational boundaries. The social exchange theory delineates that supply chain integration requires mutual long-term, normative relationship commitment. What would motivate a supplier firm to develop such positive attitude toward a buyer firm? This study is focused upon social processes embedded in economic exchanges between a buyer and a supplier. Underpinned in the social power and justice theories, this study postulates the use of non-mediated power bases (such as expert, referent, and legitimate powers) by the buyer will improve supplier¡¯s perception of procedural and distributive justices, which in turn will promote supply chain integration. In contrast, the buyer¡¯s heavy reliance on rewards, coercive, and legal legitimate powers will be negatively associated with the perceived level of justice by the supplier. Data were collected from a total of 204 Korean small and medium sized manufacturing enterprises, and the hypotheses were tested using a structural equation modeling methodology.

[Abstract]
This study tests the relationships between open innovations and performances of SMEs in different regional clusters. Technological innovations are crucial for many firms to gain higher performances and survive in turbulent environments. Firms have pursued different technology strategies to acquire new technologies and build technological capabilities through internal research and development and external collaborations. Open innovation have attracted the attentions of many scholars and firm managers responsible for their technological innovation performances. Despite increasing interests in open innovation, there are still lack of empirical stueis how open innovation is well functioned in specific conditions. Based on 335 Korea SMEs located in regional clusters, this study focuses on the effects of regional clusters on the relationships between open innovations and performances. The analytical results with full samples show that there are inverted U-curve relationships between the extent of open innovations and performances consisted with the results of prior studies. However, these relationships show different results in firms located in different regional clusters. These inconsistent relationships quest on the generalizations of open innovation strategy and consider cautious applications of open innovation strategy.

[Abstract]
The aim of this research has investigated how competitive advantages come into effect on the foreign market commitment and performance of Korean small-sized manufactured enterprise(SME). For that purpose, the competitive advantage has been compounded of two factors, which have been the differentiation advantage(DA) and the cost leadership(CL). Also, for verifying the hypothesis, the integrated model by which the mediating effects of the foreign market commitment has extended, has been used. Total samples were 386 and the analysis to the hypotheses relied on the structural equation model. The research findings reveal that DA positive influences on the commitment and the performance. The CL has effects on the commitment as well but dose not influence on the performance. Also, commitment has positive influence on the performance. Besides, the mediating role of commitment has verified that it has the partial mediating effects on the DA to the performance, while has full mediating effects on the CL to it. These results let SME see the important of the DA, because it can have effects on the performance regardless of the direct or indirect way.

[Abstract]
Although there is a general consensus that the ICT (Information and Communications) industry plays an critical role in the development of Korean economy, little empirical analysis of efficiency on the ICT small and medium sized enterprises(SMEs) has done after global economic recession of 2008. Thus, this research attempts to measure and analyze their efficiency based on DEA models. In particular, recognizing the significance of technological innovation for the competitiveness of ICT SMEs, we applied R&D expenditure, fixed assets and numbers of employees as input factors and highlighted their role in measuring efficiency. By using 4 years longitudinal data compared to previous research, this paper provides more precise information for firms to improve their efficiency with dynamic trend of firms' management efficiency change. In conclusion, theoretical and practical implications are presented for managers and future research.

[Abstract]
This study examines the determinants of FDI location in China by Korean medium & small sized (MS) and large (L) enterprises. In this paper, we thoroughly explore the sequential FDI decision by MS and L firms. This paper finds that the prior location decision by L Korean firms significantly affect the FDI location decisions by MS Korean firms. The main rationale behind this result stems from positive spill-over effects from L firms and the resolution of asymmetric information faced by MS firms. Given the entry by L firms, MS firms would make FDI into the same location. Moreover, we find that wage rates are an important determinant for MS firms while is not for L firms. On the other hand, the quality and level of infrastructure variable significantly affect L firms while is insignificant for MS firms.
Efficiency Analysis of Korean Industries on The Small and Medium Firm's R&D Investments
  • - Jin Shin (Hoseo Univercity)
[Abstract]
Recently increase of uncertainty in economy makes firms to focus on the efficiency of R&D investments rather than absolute size of investments. Still It is not sufficient to verify the efficiency of R&D investments of Korean firms. And Efficient R&D activities are required for increasing the competitiveness in the market.
Thus This research analysed efficiency of R&D investments of small and medium firms of Korean industries using DEA model.
Average technology efficiency of 9 industries were overinvested by 40% on average during the years from 2000 to 2005 and did not decrease year by year. Moreover inefficiency of R&D turned out to be bigger than inefficiency of scale. And R&D efficiency of electricity and gas, construction industries were high. The difference of R&D investment will accelerate the difference of growth according to the sizes of firms and among different industries.

The study on method to productivity of technology convergence small & medium companies through M&A financial support
[Abstract]
This study analyzed reality and problems of the existing financial support system for M&A to establish environment that can improve and vitalize productivity of small and medium sized company in technology convergence industrial field which has been a recent upsurge. Based on the findings, it investigated specific methods to make use of venture capital which represents civil direct financial market as a financial resource for M&A. Since the venture capital plays more important role in M&A financial market in technology convergence industrial field, the study investigated financial support methods for M&A so as to improve and vitalize productivity of small and medium sized company in technology convergence industrial field. Especially, huge sum of money is required for small and medium sized venture companies to develop technical convergence technology from the beginning and commercialize marketable product. Therefore, more aggressive financial support methods are required for M&A so that small and medium venture companies can enter the technology convergence industrial field effectively and improve their productivity thereafter.

[Abstract]
Since domestic small & medium manufacturers do not break away from the frame of long-lasting low-productivity, they have to innovate their growth strategy from factor input driven model to productivity driven model. To make such productivity-driven growth, small & medium enterprises(SMEs) should innovate the company structure continuously in terms of productivity management system. Based on the diagnosis models for productivity management system developed by Korea Productivity Center, this paper intends to find out the core competence that influences on productivity performance of SMEs. The assessment models for productivity management system, which consist of 6 categories, 19 core processes and productivity management performance, are designed to diagnose the productivity performance of a SME by an auditor through an on-the-spot survey. This study is a result of the on-the-spot survey that diagnosed 50 SMEs in auto parts industry. According to this empirical study, the level of productivity management system of SMEs in auto parts industry showed 243 points, which was lower than the overall SME's average 295. It was verified that leadership influenced all of the categories but had no significant factor with productivity performance. However, the on-the-spot diagnosis showed that excellent SMEs possess excellence in production system through endless productivity improvement. The fact that, after the diagnosis, 96% of SMEs ed missions corresponding to leadership category and uted them has implications. This paper suggests which core process SME should concentrate on and make improvement on in order to make a productivity-driven innovation

The impact of organizational and technical innovations on productivity: the case of Korean firms (both SMEs and LEs) and sectors
  • - Jisun Lim (Seoul National University)

[Abstract]
Econometric methods (fixed effects and generalized method of moments) are used to measure the relationship between the just-in-time process (mostly an organizational type of process), technology (R&D) and productivity. In these regressions we also include the control variables of wage gap incentive, capital to labor ratio, and education expenses for sales training to accommodate for other important influences. From the overall and quantitative analyses, we provide evidence to the hypothesis that both organization and technology greatly improve productivity of Korean manufacturing firms and sectors. In addition, not all firms and industrial sectors are influenced in the same way by all these factors.

[Abstract]
This paper introduces an agent-based simulation model representing the dynamic processes
of cooperative R&D in the manufacturing sector of South Korea. Firms¡¯ behaviors were
defined according to empirical findings on a dataset from the internationally standardized
Korean Innovation Survey in 2005. Simulation algorithms and parameters were defined
based on the determinants on firms¡¯ likelihood to participate in cooperation with other
firms when conducting innovation activities. The calibration process was conducted to the
point where artificially generated scenarios were equivalent to the one observed in the real
world. The aim of this simulation game was to create a basic implementation that could be
extended to test different policies strategies in order to observe sector responses (including
cross-sector spillovers) when promoting cooperative innovation.

Birth and Survival of Regional Ventures
[Abstract]
Venture companies are playing a significant role not only in leading innovations in various industries, also in the development of regional and national economy. In Korea, the number of ventures increased to almost 19,000 in the market (as of 2009), and more than 200 of them made over 100 million dollar sales even under the global financial crisis. Those top ventures, holding 5% of GDP, are now constituting an important axis of the national economy. Although the presence of venture companies in Seoul metropolitan area is still high, increase of venture companies with 100 billion won sales is significantly noticeable in local regions. Thus, it is expected that the venture companies take significant part in regional economies.
Furthermore, Korean government establish venture valleys and collaborating with local governments, plan to link them to specialized industries in region and new growth engine industries in order to develop venture valley as a core region for regional venture activities.
In order to make government's plan effective for vitalizing regional ventures, it is important to identify characteristics of the regions where the venture companies are actively created and survive longer. This is because as more venture companies are created and they survive longer, more companies are growing into the venture companies with 100 billion sales, in order to vitalize regional economy.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the differences that the venture companies are showing in their creation and survival in region or industry and to discover the factors that impact these differences. I wish this study helps government in establishing the policy for vitalizing regional ventures.

[Abstract]
The purpose of this study to examine the relationships among small business entrepreneurs' characteristics, entrepreneurial orientation, and firm performance. On the basis of theoretical linkages among the constructs, a conceptual model and research hypotheses were established. Data were collected from 146 small business entrepreneurs in Korea. In this study, we conceptualized entrepreneurs' characteristics by three variables: self-efficacy, entrepreneurial experience, and industry experience. The results indicated that self-efficacy and entrepreneurial experience were positively related to entrepreneurial orientation, job satisfaction and managerial performance. The results also indicated that entrepreneurial orientation had a significant positive impact on job satisfaction and managerial performance. Specially, entrepreneurial orientation fully mediated the relationship between self-efficacy and managerial performance and the relationship between entrepreneurial experience and managerial performance. Implications and direction for future research regarding the developing strategies of small business entrepreneurs' self-efficacy and extensive experiences were discussed.
